Fibonacci, The Golden Section, and LEGO.

January 27, 2010

Lego! Who doesn’t like Lego? Today we learnt that Lego can even be used to demonstrate the principles of the Fibonacci Sequence. Darren asked us to explore two themes: Fibonacci, and the concept of chance, using only our big box of Lego. Working as a group of 6, we each created a model from 5 bricks, and passed the model to the next person, who added more bricks before passing the model on again. The number of bricks added to each model increased according to the Fibonacci Sequence, until we ran out of bricks at number 89 in the sequence. It was interesting to see the differences and similarities between the models -shape varied enormously, though despite a range of brick sizes, the models were all about the same size: an average had been established. Lego IS satisfying.
