Cut-Up Collective

January 17, 2010

Cut Up are a Hackney-based artists collective who create artworks on public billboards by “remixing” billboard adverts – literally chopping them up, and reassembling them to make a new photographic image, often one taken from television news reports. The works are very public, and not strictly legal, so the collective gets publicity, though the members have to remain anonymous.

The group also make films and stage performances, which in the past have included spontaneous compositions played upon their own hand-built analogue synthesizer, a tumbling wall of washing machines, and the destruction of a BMW with sledge hammers, to the accompaniment of a live drummer, of course.
